Best Smart Thermostats in 2021

Best Smart Thermostats in 2021

The best smart thermostat can make a big difference in your home. It makes it easy and painless to control the heating and cooling in your home, so you always have the desired temperature. You even have the option to follow from your phone when you are not home. With a smart thermostat, you never come home to find that you forgot to turn off the heat when you walked out the door. In the long run, there is good money to be saved here.

The best smart thermostats can teach you routines, such as when you leave home, when you go to bed and also come with voice control. But automation is not everything - some internet-connected thermostats can, with the help of an AI, identify how long it takes for your home to be heated or cooled down. If you tie it up on your calendar, you can use as little energy for heating as possible. Some offer the option of different temperatures in different rooms, while others can intercept if you forgot to close a window or turn off the heat.

Of course, how much money you actually save depends on how you spend it, but many streams are small.

There is a wide range of smart thermostats to choose from, and each model has its own primary competence. In this guide, we have gathered the best smart thermostats from the biggest brands in the industry, such as Nest , Honeywell and Tado .

For each thermostat, we explain what aspects they excel at and which environment they fit best in. For example, could it be you weighting the price over the look? Or conversely, maybe your thermostat should look like a regular work of art?

Since the market has so many facets, a direct comparison is pointless. Therefore, we have not ranked them in any particular order. Instead, we recommend all thermostats on this list - they are all excellent. It is up to you to decide which one fits best in your home.

Best smart thermostats - an overview

1. Nest Learning Thermostat
2. Honeywell Evohome
3. Tado Smart Thermostat
4. Nest Thermostat E

1. Nest Learning Thermostat

Nest is one of the biggest names in the smart-home market and it is not without reason. The Google-owned company delivers well-designed, easy-to-use products packed with advanced technology. Nest Learning Thermostat (third generation) is known for its ability to learn your routines and adapt to them. This means that the heating system adapts to your needs over time, without you having to do anything active. The thermostat also utilizes location-based functions that track where your mobile is and can turn on or off the heat depending on your location. However, do not be afraid that it will suddenly turn off the heat and leave your guests frozen while you are away, as its built-in sensors allow it to detect if anyone is still at home. The main criticism of the Nest Learning Thermostat is that it does not offer zone control, and if you are a tech novice, setting it up and using it can be a bit complicated. The absence of zone control means you will still need to adjust individual radiators manually, however, you can still control your home as a single unit using digital. If you are looking for a first class system, Nest is a good start. And with Google as the backer, Nest is a great system to invest in if you are planning to build a completely smart home setup.

2. Honeywell Evohome

The Honeywell Evohome gives you total control over your home with individual thermostats for each radiator. This means you can set up a separate heating program for each room in your house. It is difficult to fully understand the difference this function has until you have experienced it for yourself. If you live in a house where different occupants prefer different temperatures, or if one of the rooms is always hotter or colder than the others, then this system is as sent from heaven. It even works with underfloor heating, so even if you have a large and complicated heating system, Evohome gives you the ability to control the heat throughout your house via the built-in app that is easy to use. With their simple, white plastic design, however, the control panel and radiator thermostats do not win any design awards, but that is not the point of the Evohome either. It is a simple system, without the extra lir you find at Nest or Hive, but if you have a complicated heating system that you would like to control digitally, it is difficult to find a better system.

3. Tado Smart Thermostat

The Tado Smart Thermostat should be brilliant. It offers the same zone control as the Honeywell Evohome, has an elegant design that can compete with Hive and geofencing that matches Nest's, yet it does not quite manage to bring all these features together in a coherent system. It's really nice to look at - without a doubt the most attractive zone control on the market - but the app is counter-intuitive to navigate around, and compared to the hugely user-friendly app found at Evohome, it's decidedly difficult. However, this does not mean that it is a bad system - it is still a 4-star product, and we can not imagine that anyone who buys the Tado thermostat will regret their purchase. It is so close to bringing together the best features in one way that it almost becomes the perfect system. The problem is just that Tado does not quite manage to outshine its rivals on the individual parameters. One thing that makes Tado stand out, however, is its integration with Apple HomeKit - if you are the proud owner of a HomePod, or are already deep inside Apple's ecosystem, this is most likely the ideal thermostat for you. It is also worth noting that the few things that hold Tado back are software issues rather than hardware issues, so they could potentially be fixed in the future.

4. Nest Thermostat E

If you are looking for the same look as the Nest Learning Thermostat, but do not want to spend that much money on it, there is a cheaper alternative. However, it also looks cheaper - it is made of white plastic, with a thin white layer on the plastic screen that can make it difficult to see what is on the screen - but it is an echo of the design from the original Nest Thermostat, so it is certainly no aesthetic shame to have it hanging on the wall. Nest Thermostat E draws on industry-leading technology that only lacks the most advanced features from the most expensive models, which very few will still benefit from. Nest E is a great example of how to streamline a flagship product for a cheaper alternative, without ruining the qualities that made the original so good. Make no mistake, this is not flagship quality at a bargain price, but it's still a good price for what it once was.
